SEAMEO BIOTROP Strengthens Food Security through Biofloc-Based Aquaculture Innovation

Bogor, 6 May 2026 – SEAMEO BIOTROP continues to strengthen its role in supporting national food security through the development of sustainable aquaculture innovations. One of the initiatives currently being developed is the application of biofloc technology as an efficient and environmentally friendly fish farming model with the potential to support the provision of nutritious food for communities.

As a regional institution specializing in tropical biology, SEAMEO BIOTROP views future food challenges as not only related to food availability, but also to the sustainability of production systems and the strengthening of public education on responsible resource management. This approach aligns with various food security and sustainable education programs that have been continuously promoted by BIOTROP.

Director of SEAMEO BIOTROP, Edi Santosa, stated that biofloc-based aquaculture innovation is one of the relevant solutions to address food demands amid limited land availability and the growing public need for high-quality protein sources. According to him, the biofloc system enables fish farming to be carried out more efficiently through the use of microorganisms to maintain water quality while supporting optimal fish growth.

“Food security is not only about production, but also about how technology and education can work together to create a sustainable food system,” he said.

The development of biofloc technology is also considered to have strong potential for implementation in educational institutions and communities as both a learning medium and a form of economic empowerment. In addition to producing nutritious food sources, the system can serve as an educational tool for environmental management, resource efficiency, and the implementation of circular economy principles in the fisheries sector.

SEAMEO BIOTROP has previously been actively developing various programs related to smart urban farming, circular economy, and sustainability education as part of its efforts to strengthen community capacity in facing future food and environmental challenges. These initiatives involve educational communities, researchers, government institutions, and strategic partners in promoting science- and technology-based innovation.

Through the development of biofloc-based aquaculture innovation, SEAMEO BIOTROP hopes to contribute to the creation of sustainable food models that not only support community nutritional needs, but also strengthen awareness of the importance of sustainable resource management. Furthermore, cross-sector collaboration is expected to open wider opportunities for program development at both national and regional levels.
