Japanese Students Explore Tropical Biodiversity and Innovation at SEAMEO BIOTROP

Bogor, 6 August 2026 — SEAMEO BIOTROP welcomed a delegation of 30 high school and university students from Japan for a scientific visit. The delegation comprised students from Senior High School at Sakado, Ehime University Senior High School, Ohtawara High School, and the University of Tsukuba. As part of their educational study programme in Indonesia, the visit provided the participants with an opportunity to enhance their understanding of tropical ecosystems through direct observation and experiential learning. 

The programme also highlighted SEAMEO BIOTROP’s role as a regional centre of excellence in tropical biology education and research, while fostering stronger academic connections between educational institutions in Indonesia and Japan. Through direct engagement with the Centre’s facilities and expertise, the participants were introduced to the diversity of tropical biological resources and their potential for sustainable applications. 

The delegation was warmly received by the Director of SEAMEO BIOTROP, Prof  Edi Santosa. In his welcoming remarks, he reflected on his professional experiences while working in Japan. Prof Edi encouraged the participants to actively explore tropical biodiversity and draw comparative insights between tropical ecosystems and the environmental characteristics of their home country.

During the visit, the participants explored various tropical biodiversity innovations and facilities through hands-on learning. The sessions encompassed observations and demonstrations at the stingless bee facility, hydroponics, herbarium, natural products development, freshwater aquaculture, mushroom cultivation, and tissue culture laboratory. These activities offered participants a closer look at how scientific knowledge and biological innovation can be translated into practical applications for sustainable development.

These activities allowed the participants to see firsthand how scientific knowledge, research, and biological innovation can be translated into practical applications. From biodiversity exploration to cultivation technologies and laboratory-based research, the programme offered a comprehensive perspective on the ways tropical biological resources can contribute to sustainable development. 

The scientific visit was also part of the ongoing educational relationship between SEAMEO BIOTROP, Senior High School at Sakado and University of Tsukuba. Beyond providing an avenue for knowledge exchange, the programme strengthened institutional networks and opened opportunities for future collaboration in education, research, and tropical biodiversity.  

Through programmes that connect young learners with tropical biology research and innovation, SEAMEO BIOTROP continues to promote greater global awareness of tropical biodiversity and champion meaningful international partnerships for its conservation, sustainable use, and continued scientific exploration.
