SEAMEO BIOTROP, PT Multiguna Gemilang Hold A Training Course on Methyl Bromide, A Restricted-Use Pesticide

The application of restricted-use pesticides or “RUP” such as methyl bromide demand special requirements and safety measures to minimize the negative impact on humans and the environment. Restricted-use pesticides can only be administered by certified applicators. Methyl bromide is among restricted-use pesticides that are still limitedly used in   quarantine and pre-shipment actions

SEAMEO BIOTROP as a representative of PT Multiguna Gemilang that is the holder of registration and permanent permit holder for methyl bromide held a training course on methyl bromide, a restricted use pesticide, on 6 June 2022. The training course was conducted to train participants in correctly, safely and efficiently using methyl bromide for minimizing its negative impact on humans and the environment. This event was the implementation of the Decree of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia Number 43 Article 93 of 2019 concerning Pesticide Registration which states that everyone who uses restricted pesticides is required to be properly trained on the use of restricted-use pesticides.

"I hope that participants can implement the knowledge and best practices learned in this training course to improve the application of methyl bromide in their duties,” said the Director of SEAMEO BIOTROP, Dr Zulhamsyah Imran, in his opening remarks.  "As for participants who have experiences in applying methyl bromide, this training can be a place to update the knowledge and expertise and to share their experiences.  This training course is also a medium for collaborations among practitioners,” Dr Zulhamsyah concluded. 

In his remarks, Drs. Anas S. Rasmana, MM, the Head of the Bogor City Food and Agriculture Security Office, stated that his office would issue the training certificate for the participants who passed this training course.  The issuance of the training certificate is in line with the functions of the Bogor City Food and Agriculture Security Office that is to carry out functions in the agricultural sector in Bogor City.  Drs. Anas also stated that holders of the training certificates will have the authority to administer the methyl bromide.

This event was attended by 26 participants from the Indonesian Directorate of Fertilizers and Pesticides of the Ministry of Agriculture, Perum BULOG, Dinkes Kolinlamil TNI AL, Dinkes Koarmada I, PT Sucofindo, PT Proton Gumilang, PT Jessindo Lintas Bahari, PT Alam Jaya Kreasi, PT Fortuna Prospect Perkasa, Bogor City Food and Agriculture Security Office, PT Eraresik Residential, PT Eka Energi Selaras, PT Turacon Wirastra and PT Mitra Wisesa.

Materials presented in the training course were the Theory of Restricted-use Pesticide Control Policy in Indonesia, Prevention of Pesticide Poisoning and Emergency Aid Procedures and the Methyl Bromide Fumigation Technique INBROM 98 LG. The training course was carried out in classroom and practicum sessions. 

Resource persons in this training course were  Mr. Karmilla Br. Ginting, SP, MSi from the Indonesian Directorate of Fertilizers and Pesticides, the Directorate General of Agricultural Infrastructure and Facilities, the Ministry of Agriculture; Ms. Dwi Sudaryanti, SKM from the Bogor City Health Office; Mr. Abi Said Hudri, SP from the Center for Plant Quarantine and Biosafety the Agricultural Quarantine Agency, the Ministry of Agriculture, and Ms.  Sri Widayanti, MSi from SEAMEO BIOTROP as the coordinator and moderator of the training course.
