Indonesian Wins BIOTROP`s 2014 Photo Competition on Biodiversity Conservation

Mr. Dedi Suwidiantoro from Indonesia bested 54 other contestants from Brunei, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam with his photo titled “Moss Silk Cultivation” to emerge as first prize winner in BIOTROP’s Second Biodiversity Conservation Photo Competition for 2014.

Second place winner was Mr. Brigido D. Alcayde from the Philippines for his photo titled “Plant for the Future” while the third prize went to Mr. Rully Kustiwa from Indonesia for his photo titled “Harvesting Cucumbers.” 

Recognizing that conservation of the regional’s biodiversity is everyone’s responsibility and that it is important to promote their real values, BIOTROP launched the competition in 2013 as one of its special initiatives under its 9th Five-Year Development Master Plan (2012-2017).  The Centre believes that photography is an important communication medium to actualize this purpose. This is the reason why BIOTROP holds annual regional biodiversity conservation photo competition.

The 2014 photo competition ran from March 2014 to January 2015 with theme “Our Biodiversity, Our Source of Sustainable and Healthy Living.” The Board of Jury was consisted of professional photographers from Indonesia as follows: (1) Ir  Gunawan Wibisana, MSP, MM, LRPS, PSA; (2) Amston Probel , S.Sos; and (3) Nisa Kyo Umareta, S.TP.
