SEAMEO BIOTROP and Tsukuba University Explore Research and Education Collaboration

SEAMEO BIOTROP and the University of Tsukuba initiated discussions on potential collaborations in research and education during an online meeting held on 30 January 2025 via Zoom. The meeting was attended by SEAMEO BIOTROP’s Directors and Management, along with Prof. Dr. Nakao Nomura, Regional Director of Southeast Asia and Taiwan Offices, Global Common Office, University of Tsukuba.

The University of Tsukuba, an active affiliate member of SEAMEO, regularly engages with SEAMEO Centres. During the meeting, Ms Dewi Suryani, Manager of the Human-Centered Innovation Department, and Ms Risa Rosita, Manager of the Science and Innovation Technology Department, presented several ongoing research projects at BIOTROP. These include the Biodiversity School Curriculum, Mushroom Substrate Modification, Essential Oil Teaching Factory, Mycorrhiza Research, and Seaweed Cultivation Initiatives.

In response, Dr. Nomura highlighted Tsukuba’s Plant Innovation Research Centre, which aligns with BIOTROP’s research areas, opening possibilities for joint research efforts. Addressing Ms Risa presentation on biodiversity curriculum development, he noted that Tsukuba has an existing program with high schools, which could be integrated into future symposium activities.

Furthering collaboration prospects, Dr. Doni Yusri, BIOTROP Deputy Director for Program proposed an internship program between the two institutions. Dr. Nomura acknowledged that Tsukuba has sent numerous students to IPB for study periods ranging from seven months to a year and expressed openness to BIOTROP serving as a host institution for facility-sharing programs.

As a follow-up, both institutions will exchange detailed information on research activities and propose joint programs, which will be presented during the upcoming Tsukuba Symposium in Japan.
