BIOTROP implements GIS training course for MCA Indonesia's Green Prosperity Project

BIOTROP strengthened the capacities of 30 government planning staff from three provinces of Indonesia on Geographic Information System for Participatory Mapping and Planning (PMAP 2) by completing a 26-day training from 16 May to 10 June 2016. The participants were from Jambi, Nusa Tenggara Barat and Nusa Tenggara Timur provinces.

The training was part of the Green Prosperity Project of the MCA Indonesia funded by the Millennium Challenge Corporation based in the USA. The Project is aimed at enabling district and provincial institutions in Indonesia to generate spatial data through GIS technology that could accurately locate available natural resources for sustainable management and development. Thus, the training was designed to enable the participants to develop spatial plans for their respective districts and provinces.

The training consisted of lecture-discussions, hands-on exercises and case study on GIS, Remote Sensing, Orthorectification, Geodatabase usage, Topology, Spatial Analysis Tools, 3D Analysis Tools, Model Builder in ArcGIS, Usage of GPS Instrument, UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) Technology, Query Table, Applying Survey Map into Smartphone, Quantum GIS, Layout and Printing of Aerial Map, Web GIS Implementation, IMS (Information Management System), and finally Developing Spatial Plan for respective district of the participants.

Resource persons were from BIOTROP, Land Equity International, Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT/Badan Pengkajian dan Penerapan Teknologi) and Geospatial Information Agency (BIG/Badan Informasi Geospasial).

MCA Indonesia works to empower sustainable development at local level in Indonesia by increasing agriculture productivity using spatial planning to sustainably manage natural resources and establishing renewable energy source.
