Panen Raya Nusantara, abbreviated as PARARA, is an annual creative event that aims to share information on the importance of various local products created by local communities, especially in emphasizing the value of communities’ struggles in making the products and at the same time protecting the surrounding environment.  This event is among highlighted programs of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia.

In its 2022 event, the Kick-Off Event of PARARA was held on 22 June 2022 in Lapangan Banteng, Jakarta, concurrently with the 495th Anniversary of Jakarta and as one celebrating events at the appointment of Indonesia as the Presidency of the G20 High-Level Conference.  The event was subsequently celebrated in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara Province and Borobudur Temple Area, Central Java Province.

With the theme of “Indonesian Food for A Better World”, the 2022 PARARA displayed the rich various agricultural and food products from local communities.  The event consisted of multiple programs such as the opening ceremony, exhibition, carnival, talkshow and entertainment.

The Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Dr (HC) Ir  Airlangga Hartarto, MBA, MMT led the opening ceremony of the 2022 PARARA. “Food security has been one of the most crucial issues faced by Indonesia.  Together, we need to concentrate on making sure the in-country food availability.  There are three key factors to achieving food security which are maintaining the food supply, food diversification and efficiency”, shared Dr Airlangga Hartarto.

In supporting the 2022 PARARA, SEAMEO BIOTROP carried agricultural commodities produced by tissue culture techniques.  SEAMEO BIOTROP initiated research on tissue culture in 2010-2012 by propagating Cottonii seaweed using the somatic embryogenesis tissue culture technique.  Since then, the Tissue Culture Laboratory of SEAMEO BIOTROP has been producing seedlings of plant species having high economic value, such as forestry plants (teak, jabon, sengon, tin), ornamental plants (aglaonema, alocacia), fruits (banana), tuber (Japanese taro) and aquatic plants (seaweed, anubias).

When visiting the booth of SEAMEO BIOTROP, the Coordinating Minister of Economy Affairs, Dr Airlangga Hartarto suggested collaborations between the Coordinating Ministry and SEAMEO BIOTROP to develop agribusiness commodities having export values.  The Minister was very impressed with the achievement of SEAMEO BIOTROP’s Tissue Culture Laboratory for producing seedlings of food commodities using the tissue culture technique.
