Bogor, 10 September 2026 — SEAMEO BIOTROP organized the "Bio-Factory Class Teacher Workshop: Review and Dissection of the Book on Innovation, Models, Media, and Assessments in Biotechnology" on 10–11 September 2026 at the SEAMEO BIOTROP Campus, Bogor. The training was attended by 30 science and biology teachers from senior high schools, vocational high schools, and Islamic high schools (SMA/SMK/MA) across Bogor and DKI Jakarta. The workshop aimed to facilitate teachers in understanding, developing, and implementing instructional tools, laboratory practicums, and authentic biotechnology assessments based on the reviewed guidebook.
The event was officially opened by the Deputy Director for Program of SEAMEO BIOTROP, Dr. Doni Yusri. In his remarks, he emphasized the vital role of teachers in fostering students who are critical, creative, communicative, and skilled in problem-solving. He explained that the Bio-Factory Class guidebook developed by SEAMEO BIOTROP is expected to serve as a comprehensive reference for science education, enabling biotechnology theories to be practiced directly in schools.
Head of BGTK DKI Jakarta, Erfan Agus, expressed appreciation for the synergy established with SEAMEO BIOTROP. According to him, this collaboration aligns with efforts to ensure equal opportunities for all educators to enhance their competencies and grow professionally. He also highlighted the urgency of urban farming and bio-factory concepts that correspond closely with urban conditions in Jakarta, expressing hope that this initiative serves as a starting point for broader educational impact.
Programme Coordinator, Dewi Suryani, explained that the two-day workshop was designed to integrate conceptual sessions with practical applications. The first day focused on material presentations and in-depth book reviews from various biology teaching perspectives. The second day was dedicated to laboratory practice on fermented products, discussions on student entrepreneurship, and presentations of instructional implementation plans to be applied by teachers in their respective schools.
Through this programme, participants are targeted to fully understand the seven learning modules in biotechnology, practice at least two core practicum models including fermentation and DNA isolation, and develop lesson plans (RPP) and student worksheets (LKPD) based on Project-Based Learning (PjBL), Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS), and Deep Learning.
Moving forward, SEAMEO BIOTROP hopes this activity will foster 30 "Bio-Factory Ambassador Teachers" ready to implement the instructional modules in pilot schools. This community of educators is expected to share best practices, advance creative and contextual biotechnology, and serve as agents of change within their educational environments.
