Jefferson Science Fellow from USA explores genomics research collaboration with BIOTROP

On July 1st 2013, Dr. Brook Milligan, Director of the Conservation Genomics Laboratory and Professor of Biology at New Mexico State University in USA, visited BIOTROP to share information about the latest genomic technological advances and discuss potential opportunities for collaboration on genomics research.

Dr. Milligan’s visit was part of his official mission in Indonesia from 1-3 July 2013 as a Jefferson Science Fellow at the US Department of State based in Washington DC to promote an emerging genomic tool that could generate DNA sequencing information using handheld device which is expected to be handy and cheaper in price.

While at BIOTROP, Dr. Milligan was met and received orientation on the Centre’s programs and activities from Dr. Irdika Mansur, Deputy Director for Resources Management, and Dr. Ulfah J. Siregar and Dr. Sukisman Tjitrosemito, both Centre scientists.

Dr. Milligan was keen on establishing collaboration to apply genetics technology to tracking the origin of legally and illegally sourced timber products.
