Abstract :
The current environmental issues such as the greenhouse effect and correct waste disposal methods have gained much attention throughout the community by adopting new concept of waste management. The concept of controlled anaerobic digestion may appear viable to reduce green house gas emissions and provide a better waste disposal method for organic waste. This research project was designed to develop an anaerobic digester model for processing organic waste. The selected organic waste was collected from the disposal area of Tembalang Campus in Semarang. The evaluation of anaerobic digestion for organic waste in order to determine the optimized production of biogas and compost was conducted. The effect of organic loading rate, influent solids concentration, and hydraulic retention time were also examined. The results showed that the anaerobic digestion of organic waste provides a promising solution to the production of biogas and fertiliser and thereby, providing improved waste management and hygiene. However, it is suggested that further researches on increasing solid loading, decreasing solids retention time and improving conversion efficiency are required.
