Antioxidant, Induction Apoptosis and Anticancer Activities of Trigona spp Propolis and Nanopropolis from Pandeglang, Banten, Indonesia

Abstract :
Propolis is a resinous substance collected by stingless bees or honey bees from various plant sources. It possesses various physiological properties such as antioxidant, apoptosis and anticancer effects.

The research was able to extract propolis and also produced nanopropolis from Trigona spp originating
from Pandeglang, Banten Province of Indonesia. These extracts were evaluated for their antioxidant,
apoptosis and anticancer activities through 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay system, fluorescence microscopy and MTT Assay, respectively.

The research revealed that Trigona spp propolis from Pandeglang posseses inhibiting rate (IC50) of 75.34 ug/ml for antioxidant, 223,17 ug/ml for anticancer and 6,015 ug/ml for induction apoptosis. The nanopropolis with concentration of 8 ug/ml ( or IC50 value) could inhibit MCF-7 cell line growth as indicated by 47,146 death cells out of 52,854 live cells) on the specimen tested. The nanopropolis that was produced had particle sizes ranging from 147,5 nm to 777,3 nm. Although the effect of Pandeglang propolis and nanopropolis on breast cancer cell line in vitro is promising, further pharmacological and clinical trials are however still required.
