BIOTROP Joins 50th SEAMEC Conference 2019 - 131 time(s) visited

SEAMEO BIOTROP’s Director Dr. Irdika Mansur, Deputy Director for Administration Dr. Zulhamsyah Imran, and Acting Deputy Director for Program Dr. Aslan participated in the 50th SEAMEO Council (SEAMEC) Conference 2019 at the Sunway Hotel Resort and Spa, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (22-25/7). The SEAMEO Council Conference is a biannual meeting organized by SEAMEO Secretariat to determine the general policies and strategic directions of the organization. In this event, all ministers and Centres presented the achievement and progress of activities conducted.

The conference was opened by HE Dr. Maszlee Malik, Malaysia’s Minister of Education. In his opening remarks, Dr. Maszlee Malik encouraged all SEAMEO Centres to establish more intensive collaboration for better Southeast Asian communities. He also mentioned the strategies in implementing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) beyond 2020, including educational strategies sharing of each minister that are implemented in their countries.

This conference also signified the appointment of new President of SEAMEO Council for the 2019-2021 period which fell to Dr. Maszlee Malik. Together with this, HE Prof. Dr. Muhadjir Effendy, Indonesia’s Minister of Education and Culture and Former President of SEAMEO Council also launched the Rumah Belajar program as his legacy in which all Centres will be able to contribute to. Rumah Belajar is an open educational resource that can be accessed for free by Southeast Asian communities. Concerning this, BIOTROP also provides videos, books, research reports, and infographics for the content of the resource.

During the conference, BIOTROP conducted bilateral meetings to develop networks and follow up activities that have been carried out with partner countries, for example, a meeting with Brunei Darussalam to further discuss Teaching Factory program and with Cambodia about the upcoming school garden training activity. Recognizing the successful implementation of the Agriculture Vocational School Vegetable and Fruit Tree Orchard Establishment (SMARTS-BE) program by the Centre, Dr. Irdika also introduced this program to other Centres in order to be applied in their respective countries.

An exhibition was also held in conjunction with the conference activity, with focusing on the Industry 4.0 and Internet of Things (IoT)-based innovation. BIOTROP also joined this exhibition by presenting publication and technology in accordance with the theme, where students, officials, and communities from various levels were able to obtain the knowledge.

On this occasion, Ir. Samsul A. Yani, the Centre’s Product Development and Services Department Manager, was also awarded the 2019 SEAMEO Service Award. This award is a form of recognition and appreciation to outstanding officers from the SEAMEO Regional Centres/Network and the Secretariat for their dedication to the organization.

Also attending the activity were the Education Ministers of the eleven SEAMEO Member Countries, representatives from eight SEAMEO Associate Member Countries, representatives from five Affiliate Members, and representatives from twenty-six SEAMEO Regional Centres and Network.
