Shared this through:

BIOTROP recently expanded its academic linkage by signing a 3-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Universitas Sumatra Utara (USU) on 29 August 2015 and Universitas Jambi (UNJA)  on 7 September 2015.

Both MoUs would involve (1) joint implementation of research, capacity building, information exchange programs, projects and other related activities whenever and wherever feasible opportunities present themselves; and (2) staff and student exchange and consultations on relevant research, training and other learning events.

With USU, the collaboration will focus on promoting the propagation of kemenyan tree (Styrax benzoin) forconservation, production, and enhancement of the multi uses of the tree for community livelihood. Kemenyan is known as a source of aromatic resin that commands high price in the international market.

On the other hand, BIOTROP and UnJa agreed to venture on forest restoration, including management of forest invasive alien plant species, and community-based livelihood generation such as aquaculture and mushroom production.

SEAMEO BIOTROP Director Dr. Irdika Mansur signed the MoUs with USU’s Vice Rector IV for Planning and Cooperation, Prof. Dr. Ningrum Natasya Sirait, SH, MLI, and UNJA’s Rector Prof Dr. H. Aulia Tasman.
