For the second time, SEAMEO BIOTROP implemented a National Training Course on Sorghum Production to Support  Food, Feed, Energy, and Industry Needs on 28 November - 2 December 2011 at its headquarter in Bogor, Indonesia. Thirty-four Indonesian nationals from goverment research institutions, universities, farmer groups and private companies attended the training course.

The training course was generally aimed at enhancing the participants’ knowledge and skills on the various techniques in producing and utilizing sorghum to support the food, feed, energy, and industry needs of Indonesia.   The training also served as a venue for the participants to exchange information and experiences among them and establish linkages for future collaborative endeavors toward empowering dry land farmers in sorghum production.

The training course covered lecture-discussions and practical works on the following topics: Introduction to sorghum breeding, post-harvest handling of sorghum, management of insect pests of sorghum in storage, storage fungi of sorghum grains, nutritional value of sorghum-based foods, formulation of sorghum silage for ruminants, sorghum grains-based feed for quails, sorghum as medium for oyster mushroom culture, sweet sorghum mills and sweet sorghum-based bio-refinery for energy.

Training Course resource persons came from SEAMEO BIOTROP, Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT),  Indonesian Research Institute for Animal Production (BALITNAK) and the Center for the Application of Isotopes and Radiation Technology of the National Nuclear Energy Agency (PATIR-BATAN).

Dr. Soepriyanto, SEAMEO BIOTROP Senior scientist, coordinated the implementation of the course.
