SEAMEO BIOTROP in collaboration with Balai Uji Terap Teknik dan Metode Karantina Pertanian (BUTTMP) conducted a training on “Laboratory-Scale Technical Testing of Food Safety for Fresh Food of Plant Origin: Quality Assurance for the Analysis of Mycotoxins” on 8-12 August 2011.  The training was held at SEAMEO BIOTROP and attended by 25 participants coming from the Technical Implementation Units (UPTs) of Agricultural Quarantine Agency throughout Indonesia.

The training had two-fold objectives, namely: (1) To enhance the understanding of the participants on the concepts of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) especially those managing Mycotoxin Testing Laboratory; and (2) To provide information to the Agricultural Quarantine Agency of Indonesia on how to select the appropriate laboratory partners to implement Supervision of Food Safety for fresh food of plant origin in accordance with the Regulation of the Minister of Agriculture No. 27 Year 2009.

A laboratory's technical competence is an important factor in the analysis of mycotoxin. The quality of mycotoxin test results is very influential on the information to be submitted to related parties and will ultimately affect the management and policies to be defined. Mycotoxin Testing Laboratory’s technical competence can be achieved by implementing the technical requirements specified in ISO 17025, as follows:

•   Improving the competence of personnel who perform mycotoxin testing
•   Ensuring that the conditions of laboratory accommodation for mycotoxin testing
    will not cause error results
•   Ensuring that the mycotoxin testing method has been verified (for the official method) and validated (for non-official methods)
•   Ensuring that the feasibility of equipment has been verified before use
•  Using traceable reference materials and applying the Internal Quality Control as a quality assurance of the test results during testing
•  Sampling should be done according to the purpose
•  Handling of samples should be carried out properly to avoid error
•  Data of Mycotoxin testing and publication of test results reports can be traced easily

The topics and the resource persons during the training were as follows:
  1. Levels of Contamination and Mycotoxin Regulation presented by Prof. Dr. Rizal Syarief, lecturer at the Faculty of Agricultural Technology  of Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB)
  2. Destructive Fungi and Mycotoxins presented by Prof. Dr. Okky Setyawati Dharmaputra, lecturer at the Department of  Biology of IPB and Senior Scientist of SEAMEO BIOTROP
  3. The MycoRED Project for Worldwide Mycotoxin Reduction in Food and Feed, and Related European Project for Harmonization of Analytical Methods presented by Dr. Angelo Visconti, Director of the Institute of Sciences of Food Production, Italy and MYCORED Coordinator
  4. Quality Management System of Mycotoxins Testing Laboratory presented by Mrs. Santi Ambarwati MSi, Technical Manager of Services Laboratory of SEAMEO BIOTROP
  5. Mycotoxins Testing Using LC MS / MS presented by Mr. Ferdi Ferdian Kusnadhi, from PT Berca Niaga Medika (Authorozed Distributor of Agilent)
