SEAMEC President and Philippine Education Secretary Br. Armin Luistro challenged SEAMEO BIOTROP to synergize with other SEAMEO centres and like-minded institutions in addressing common developmental issues and concerns in the Southeast Asian region.  This challenge was made during His Excellency’s visit to SEAMEO BIOTROP on 29 November 2010 in response to the presentation of SEAMEO BIOTROP Director Dr. Bambang Purwantara on the Centre’s accomplishments and future prospects.

The SEAMEC Secretary also emphasized the need to forge strategic alliances to maximize instead of compete for available fund resources to achieve common development goals for the region.  He expressed his hope that the Centre’s research and training activities could focus more on responding  to  energy, food, and water concerns of the region toward improving the quality of life and ensure environmental sustainability. Recognizing the role of tropical biology, he further encouraged the Centre to build upon its previous accomplishments particularly by expanding and fully utilizing the implications of its research outputs for the above concerns.

The visit also enabled the SEAMEC President to learn more about SEAMEO BIOTROP through an exhibit that featured the Centre’s products and services while receiving short briefings from concerned unit heads and scientists.

As part of his welcome remarks, Dr. Bambang assured the SEAMEC President  of the Centre’s full support and cooperation in implementing the decisions and programs of the SEAMEO Council.
The SEAMEC President was accompanied by Dr. Noorhaizamdin Abdullah, Deputy Director for Programme of SEAMEO Secretariat, Dr. Ramon Bacani, Director of SEAMEO INNOTECH, and representatives from the Ministry of National Education of Indonesia.
