On 16 February 2010, a Round Table Discussion on the Development of the potential and prospect of Marine Resources of Kepulauan Seribu was held at BIOTROP, Bogor. This event is one of the series of activities conducted in conjunction with the 42nd Anniversary of SEAMEO BIOTROP.

Mr. Burhanuddin, Regent of Kepulauan Seribu in his keynote address pointed out that involvement of the Indonesian Government is needed to develop and to conserve the environment of Kepulauan Seribu.  Activities of   marine ecotourism should be encouraged.

The Regent said that the social welfare of the community living at Kepulauan Seribu depends on tourism.  Therefore, it is considered necessary to maintain the environmental sustainability and security of Kepulauan Seribu.  

He further explained that the Government is expected to support the development of electric cables under the sea for the northern part of the island i.e the location for marine tourism.  It is hoped that the output of the roundtable discussion will serve as recommendation to be considered by the Government in the frame to develop the island. 

Twenty research papers on Kepulauan Seribu were presented and discussed during the conference.  BIOTROP is committed to continue researches on Kepulauan Seribu so that the development will be based on environmental sustainability
