Job Vacancy: Research Department Manager

The Southeast Asian Regional Centre for Tropical Biology is one of the 24 specialist centres of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO), an intergovernmental organization whose purpose is to promote cooperation in education, science and culture in the region. The Centre envisions itself to be “A Leading Centre in enhancing and promoting the real values of tropical biology in Southeast Asia” through its four mandates, namely: research, capacity building, information exchange, and community development. The Centre is located in Tajur, Bogor, West Java.

Since its establishment in 1968, the Centre has been conducting and coordinating research activities on various aspects of tropical biology related to its program thrusts. The Centre’s research activities have produced technologies and publications for the benefits of its stakeholders.  On average, the Centre implements 20 research activities yearly through funding from the Government of Indonesia and partner-organizations.

To sustain and improve its research programming,  implementation and impacts, SEAMEO BIOTROP needs a qualified person to be its Research Department Manager. The Research Department Manager is expected to oversee and manage the research programs of the Centre and the research activities of the Centre’s affiliate scientists and research assistants working in various research laboratories. She/He will be acountable to the Centre’s Deputy Director for Program.

Responsibilities:

  1. Directly oversee and promote the research programs and activities of the Centre
  2. Provide mentoring and guidance to supervisor and research assistants in the operation of the various research laboratories of the Centre
  3. Build and maintain strong relationships with the Centre’s affiliate scientists and develop networking with researchers from other institutions in the Southeast Asia region in relation to the Centre’s Scientists’ Exchange Program
  4. Carry out the Centre’s ISO procedures in implementing research projecs through DIPA funding from developing call for proposals, conducting internal and external evaluation of proposals to monitoring research project progress
  5. Develop research project proposals in collaboration with affiliate scientists and researchers from partner-institution for outside funding
  6. Contribute to development of internal systems that facilitate good research practices by the Centre’s affiliate scientists, research assistants, and partner- researchers
  7. Maintain effective communication and coordination with other departments and units in carrying out the research functions of the Centre
  8. Write  accomplishment reports of the Research Department for inclusion in the Centre’s Annual Report and Governing Board Meeting documents
Qualifications Required:

  1. Male/Female, not more than 45 years old
  2. PhD degree holder either in the field of agriculture, forestry, marine and fisheries sciences, environmental science and biology
  3. Minimum of 4-year experience in managerial position preferably in international organizations
  4. Solid understanding and working experience and knowledge on planning, developing and implementing research programs and activities
  5. Proven strong leadership and supervisory experience including staffing, workloads, and finances
  6. Proven communication, negotiation and influencing, networking, and presentation skills
  7. Proficiency in writing and evaluating quality research project proposals both in English and Indonesian languages
  8. Proven ability to generate and negotiate for diverse funding for research projects and activities
  9. Creative and innovative
  10. Proven ability for accuracy and good judgment under pressure, multi-taking and adherence to Deadlines
  11. Proficiency in using computer and Microsoft programs specifically PowerPoint and Photoshop
  12. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and motivate co-workers at all levels of the organization
  13. NON SMOKER
  14. Has no kinship or relationship with active staff of BIOTROP
  15. This position is open only to Indonesian nationals
