SEAMEO BIOTROP trained 24 lecturers, researchers, and graduate students on the Application of Molecular Techniques in Forest Tree Breeding on 25-29 April 2011 at its headquarter in Bogor. The training course was supported by DIPA funding through the Ministry of National Education of Indonesia. The training course had the following objectives: (1) To provide the participants with an overview on the use of molecular marker, either based on PCR or hybridization, to develop a fingerprint for tropical forest tree species; (2) To introduce to them PCR-based technologies, such as SSH, for simplifying and speeding up identification of a specific gene of a tropical forest tree species; and (3) To introduce Gateway Cloning technique as an efficient cloning method in molecular biology and genetics of forest tree species.
The training course consisted of 30% lectures and 70% practical works on the following topics: (1) Application of Molecular Marker in Forest Tree Breeding and Conservation, (2) Application of PCR Technology for Cloning and Suppression Subtractive Hybridization (SSH), and Methods on Cloning and Gateway Cloning. Participants worked on DNA Isolation, PCR for microsatellite analysis and Gateway Cloning during the hands-on practices at the Integrated Molecular Biology Laboratory of SEAMEO BIOTROP.
The resource persons for the training course were Dr. Ulfah J. Siregar of SEAMEO BIOTROP, Dr. M. Basyuni, S.Hut., M.Sc. of Sumatera Utara University, and Dr. Tetty Chaidamsari of the Indonesian Biotechnology Research Institute for Estate Crops. Dr. Ulfah also served as the technical training course coordinator.
