About BIOTROP

BIOTROP, the Southeast Asian Regional Centre for Tropical Biology, is one of the fifteen centres under the SEAMEO (Southeast Asian Minister of Education Organization). It is based in Bogor, Indonesia where it was established in 1968.

BIOTROP gets financial assistance for its capital and operational funds from the Goverment of Indonesia. Special funds for the implementation of its programme of activities come from the SEAMEO Secretariat (SEAMES) through the contribution of member countries and donations of associate member countries. Special projects are financed by international or national funding agencies.

The policy-making body of BIOTROP is the Governing Board consisting of nine members, one from each of the member countries. Implementation of the policies is the responsibility of the Director and two deputies, one for Resouces Management and Communication and one for Programme and Marketing. The Director is appointed by the Southeast Minister of Education Council (SEAMEC) President, upon nomination from the respective Minister of Education of Indonesia. The Deputy Director for Programme and Marketing is nominated from among the member countries except Indonesia by the respective Minister of Education and appointed by the Governing Board. The Deputy Director for Resources Management and Communication is nominated by the Minister of Education from among the nominees of the host country. Their appoinment is for a term of three years and can be renewed for a second term.

All activities are carried out on the basis of a five-year development plan. The 8th five-year development plan begins fiscal year 2007/2012. As in the past, the plan has been extensively discussed through a series of consultation, first with scientist and agencies, including unversities and research institutions at the local and national levels, followed by consultation at regional level. Endorsed by the different countries High Officials, The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Council (SEAMEC) gave its approval during its meeting in Bali - Indonesia, in March 2007.
